Betula populifolia x crimson frost

Betula populifolia x crimson frost

Best grown in moist, acidic, sandy or rocky, well-drained loams in full sun to part shade. Best foliage color occurs in full sun, but plants appreciate some afternoon part shade in areas that experience hot summers.

This tree needs consistently moist soils. Consider using soaker hoses and organic mulches to keep the root zone cool and moist. It needs little pruning, but if necessary, prune during the dormant season. Avoid pruning in spring when the sap is running because it will bleed.

It is a small to medium sized tree that typically grows 7- 12 metres tall with an upright, narrow-pyramidal shape. It is noted for its burgundy-red to purple foliage and exfoliating white bark with cinnamon hues. Foliage acquires orange, red and yellow shades in autumn.

A hybrid between Betula platyphylla x B. pendula purpurea‘ Crimson Frost’ and Betula platyphylla var. japonica ‘Whitespire’ that combines the best attributes of both cultivars. Best foliage colour in full sun.

Generally available from good garden centres. (Flemings is the wholesaler)
